Former HFSPO President Prof. Masao Ito Passed Away

We are saddened by the news of the untimely passing away of eminent neuroscientist and former HFSPO President, Prof. Masao Ito, on 18 December, at the age of 90 years.

Prof. Ito made seminal contributions in the neuroscience field by elucidating the mechanisms of cerebellar motor learning. His efforts in neuroscience led to the founding of the RIKEN Brain Science Institute (BSI) in 1997, of which he was the founding director. He joined HFSPO as a member of the Council of Scientists in 1989, became a member of the HFSPO Board of Trustees in 2000, and was elected President, a position he held until 2009. During his presidency, HFSPO established itself as the organization to support innovative research based on international collaborations through integration of different and distant scientific disciplines. This ambitious spirit still prevails in HFSPO.
