We would like to congratulate Edith Heard for being named the fifth Director General of the Heidelberg based EMBL. Edith Heard is leading the unit of Genetics and Developmental Biology at Institut Curie and is faculty at the Collège de France. Edith was among the very first cohort of HFSP fellows back in 1990 and was the PI on a 2003 HFSP Program Grant. The full press release is available at

We are deeply saddened by the news that reached us today about the untimely death of HFSP Long-Term Fellow Jean-Philippe Grossier. Jean-Philippe received his fellowship in 2016 and was working with Claude Desplan at New York University. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues in New York and Paris.

Guidelines for 2018 Young Investigator and Program Grant applications are now available. The website for online applications will be open by mid-January. You must initiate an application (with a 2018 reference number) via the website by March 20th, 2017. The deadline to submit a Letter of Intent is March 30th, 2017.

HFSPO is hosting an international workshop to discuss important issues concerning the future of data resources in the life sciences. Some 40 delegates from around the world representing key data resources are participating. The programme is available here.
