Appointment of the Secretary-General

The Board of Trustees of the International Human Frontier Science Program Organization (HFSPO) is proud to announce the appointment of Professor Torsten N. Wiesel to serve as the Secretary-General of the Organization. Professor Wiesel took office on 1 April, 2000, succeeding Professor Michel Cuenod who retired in March 2000 after 7 years of service.

Professor Wiesel is a distinguished physician and scientist. He was born in Uppsala, Sweden, and in 1955 he moved to the United States to perform research at Johns Hopkins University Medical School (Baltimore). He moved to Harvard Medical School (Boston) in 1959. He has made many critical contributions in the field of neuroscience of vision, for which he has received a number of prestigious honors and awards including a Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1981. From 1992 until his retirement in 1998, Professor Wiesel served as the President of Rockefeller University (New York) and has been recognized for his strong and visionary leadership of that institution. His membership in learned societies and election to the presidencies of both American and international scientific societies have placed him in contact with eminent scientists throughout the world. Thus, Professor Wiesel is exceptionally well qualified to lead the HFSP into the next millennium.
