European 10th Anniversary Ceremony and Workshops

The European 10th Anniversary celebration of the HFSP was held in Strasbourg at the European Parliament from May 31st to June 2nd. It consisted of an official ceremony and two scientific workshops.


Official Ceremony (June 1st 1999)

The ceremony featured the following:

1. European government representatives addressed the ceremony on the importance of international collaboration in science.

2. Awards were presented to members of the European scientific community who were instrumental in the establishment or development of the HFSP.

3. The Université Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg presented an Honorary Doctorate to the former Japanese Prime Minister Nakasone, for his services to international science through his original suggestion to establish the HFSP (see Historical Highlights).

4.A round-table discussion was held on new perspectives in the life sciences in the coming century. The main topics featured in the round-table were (a) New concepts emerging in the life sciences; (b) The new technologies for the study of complex systems in biology; (c) Applications of new technologies; (d) Impact of new technologies on society.

Scientific Workshops (May 31st - June 2nd 1999)

Replicon Theory and Cell Division
Organisers: W. Fangman (Seattle), T. Kishimoto (Yokohama), M. Kohiyama (Paris)
Topics included: Replication, chromosome segregation and cell division in procaryotes, yeast and higher eucaryotes.

Topics included: Neurophysiology, neurochemical mediators, molecular genetics, circadian rhythms, functional brain imaging.
