HFSP alumni honoured with top scientific awards

We are delighted that in 2022 HFSP awardees and alumni continue to receive some of the top scientific prizes in recognition of their frontier research. A selection of recent prize winners is listed below.

Three HFSP research grant alumni were among the winners of the 2022 Leibniz Award from the German Research Foundation (DFG). Almut Arneth of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, received the award “for her outstanding research into the interaction and feedback between terrestrial ecosystems and climate change.” Iain Couzin of the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior and the University of Konstanz, Germany, was recognized for “his outstanding work in the field of behavioural biology, which has led to a fundamentally new understanding of collective behaviour.” Eileen Furlong of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Germany, was awarded “for her work in developmental biology on functional mechanisms of enhancers in gene regulation.”

This year’s Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine went to HFSP research grant alumna Carol Robinson of the University of Oxford, UK, “for establishing mass spectrometry as a rigorous method to analyse the composition of protein complexes, and their interactions with small molecules.”

All three winners of the 2022 Brain Prize from the Lundbeck Foundation are HFSP alumni. Former HFSP fellow Sylvia Arber of the Biozentrum, University of Basel, Switzerland, and research grant alumni Martyn Goulding of The Salk Institute, La Jolla, USA, and Ole Kiehn of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, received recognition “for having revolutionized our understanding of the neuronal cell types and circuits that control movement.” Interestingly Martyn Goulding and Ole Kiehn shared a 2002 HFSP research grant, together with Joel Glover and Keir Pearson, to study the genetic dissection of the neuronal circuits that control locomotion.

Prizes to HFSP awardees and alumni that come to our notice are published in HFSP's annual reports.
