The dawn of a new era for data resources in the life sciences

The GBC launches the first round to identify and select Global Core Biodata Resources

HFSP supports frontier research in the life sciences, which also depends on a sustainable biodata infrastructure. The question of how we organize the ever-increasing amount of data resulting from life science research is central to the mission of the Global Biodata Coalition (GBC), established in 2019. HFSP was one of the original founders and drivers involved in bringing the GBC to life and has since supported the establishment of the GBC in kind.

Data resources have multiplied rapidly in recent years and come in various sizes, which makes the current life science data landscape a patchy ecosystem that lacks a coherent approach for curation and management. On 17 January 2022, the GBC launched its first call for identifying and selecting “Global Core Biodata Resources”. HFSP welcomes the GBC initiative because it is an important first step to improving the future management of these precious resources for scientists all over the world.
