HFSP Session at IUMS 2024: the concept
The session will introduce the International Human Frontier Science Program Organization (HFSP) which is an international program supporting frontier research in the life sciences. HFSP supports fundamental research into the complex mechanisms of living organisms, ranging from the biomolecular level to the whole organism and its physiology and behavior.
Based on recent estimates, the diversity of microorganisms surpasses that of other organisms by orders of magnitude, but only a tiny fraction of this microbial dark matter is sufficiently understood to date. Complex microbiomes not only govern all major biogeochemical processes in the oceans, soils, freshwaters, and other environments, but they also occur in tight associations with most higher organisms. Thanks to recent technological advancements in the life and data sciences and interdisciplinary research efforts, the links between the composition and activity of microbial communities and the ongoing changes in climate, agricultural practice, the epidemiology of pathogens, as well as other key areas are increasingly understood. In the face of the current environmental change and considerable anthropogenic impact, this opens up new horizons for climate mitigation, bioeconomy, and human health.
HFSP aims to support frontier research by involving scientists from outside the life sciences as part of research collaborations and as postdoctoral fellows. To this end, the Program and Early Career Grants are specifically geared to fostering interactions between scientists from different disciplines and this is a major factor in the review of applications in these programs. The HFSP fellowship program offers research opportunities for postdoctoral researchers to work in laboratories in other countries. In particular, the Cross‑Disciplinary Fellowships aim to equip young scientists from outside biology with the skills needed to tackle problems in the life sciences.
