Expanding the pool: how HFSP Accelerator Grants strengthen global research teams

In 2026, HFSP has awarded 10 Accelerator Grants to further expand the diversity of expertise and geographic representation within its Research Grant teams, reinforcing its commitment to inclusive and collaborative science.

The Human Frontier Science Program is built on international collaboration, bringing together scientists with different expertise, perspectives and backgrounds to tackle complex questions in the life sciences. The HFSP Accelerator Grants are designed to strengthen this approach by expanding existing research teams.

In 2026, ten Accelerator Grants have been awarded, enabling selected HFSP Research Grant teams to include one additional scientist. This targeted expansion provides an opportunity to broaden both the scientific scope of the projects and the diversity of the teams.

The program focuses on scientists based in specific HFSP Member countries: India, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Korea, Singapore and South Africa. By integrating researchers from these countries into ongoing projects, the Accelerator Grants help a more balanced participation across the global research landscape and contribute to a more inclusive and representative scientific community. Beyond increasing geographic diversity, the Accelerator Grants also enhance the range of expertise within teams. By bringing in new perspectives, these additional researchers can open new directions for discovery and strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration.

The initiative reflects HFSP’s broader commitment to supporting frontier research through international partnerships. By expanding teams in a focused and strategic way, the Accelerator Grants help create new opportunities for scientists to contribute to cutting-edge research, while reinforcing the collaborative spirit at the core of the program.
