Nagata is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking research into programmed cell death, or apoptosis. His discoveries concerning the Fas receptor and Fas ligand have significantly advanced our understanding of how cells die and how the body eliminates dead cells, providing fundamental insights into biological processes and human health.
The recognition received now by Shigekazu Nagata follows a similar distinction awarded in 2024 to another former HFSPO President, Nobutaka Hirokawa, whose pioneering work on molecular motors transformed our understanding of intracellular transport. Previously, in 2010, Akito Arima, and in 1996, Masao Ito, both former HFSPO presidents, received the same honor.
The Order of Culture, awarded to these four former HFSPO Presidents, highlights their exceptional scientific contributions and longstanding commitment to advancing fundamental research.
