We are saddened by the passing of David Baltimore, eminent researcher and recipient of the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on 6 September 2025 (see an obituary in Science). Over the span of his illustrious career, David Baltimore has not only led breakthrough research through his various leadership positions, but he has also supported the next generation of researchers by hosting HFSP fellows in his research laboratories.
His work on retroviruses and viruses not only paved the way for understanding, he challenged existing dogmas and advanced treatment of diseases.
The scientific community has lost a giant of molecular biology, and his contribution and outspokenness will be missed by many.
