Having cancelled the annual HFSP Awardees Meeting in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was decided to hold the 2021 meeting as an entirely virtual event.
The meeting was hosted on a state-of-the-art interactive platform "OnAIR" that provided a unique environment for scientific exchange with opportunities for networking via the live Q&A during the oral sessions and the meeting hub. Talks were broadcast live but were made available on replay for three months following the meeting.
A record number of 714 participants registered for the meeting. This year we invited all current awardees and all HFSP alumni awarded since 2010, of which about 230 awardees and 170 alumni participated. As we were not limited by space this year, we were able to accept about 250 post-docs and other lab members working with HFSP research grant holders.
This year there were 40 10-minute oral presentations and over 200 e-posters, which included a short 3-minute video to accompany the poster. Highlights of the programme included meeting the winners of the 2021 HFSP Nakasone Award and a talk by special guest speaker Niklas Blomberg, Director of Elixir, who introduced the HFSP community to Elixir and the newly created Global Biodata Coalition.
